About the city and region

Mykolaiv is an administrative and cultural center of the Mykolaiv region, as well as for the Mykolaiv area within the region. Hence Mykolaiv is the city of region subordinance it is under the subject directly to the region authorities rather to the area administration housed in the city itself.

The town was erected in 1829 by the Russian Governor of Prince Potemkin originally as a shipyard with given simple name as New Shipyard on the Ingul river. Prince Potemkin signed an order to construct a shipyard in August 1789, which is thought to be a city birth day. The shipyard was planned to serve for the reparation of the Russian military ships in the Russion Turkish struggle. Potemkin required the shipyard to be called Nikolayev to memorize the date of fall of the Ochakov city to the Russian army under his command in Dec. 1888 close to the holiday of Saint Nicolaus (Nikolay - in Russian and Mykola in Ukrainian) December 19, in the Orthodox church.

The history of the city has always been closely connected to the building of ships - mostly navy ones. The Russian military ship, Admiral of the Navy of the Soviet Union Kuznyetsov, was built right here in Mykolaiv.

Today Mykolaiv is a major ship producing center of Ukraine and very important and influential river port. The city has 3 major ship stations, some of which are able of building military ships. Other important industry directions, in which the city of Mykolaiv is well-know are mechanical engineering, metallurgy and cosmentics, as well as light industry.

The city possesses International Airport that has flihgts directions to other European and also Asian countries.

How to get there

By air - One can reach this city by internal flights from Kyiv or other cities of Ukraine, and foreign guests can use the service of international connection and utilize the flights from other countries

By car - Mykolaiv can be reached by many of main highways in its region of Ukraine.

By train - there are regular railway routes from other cities of Ukraine to Mykolaiv. Many of them start in Kyiv, so you can easily reach the city.
