About the city and region
Sumy is the administrative, cultural and industrial center of the Sumy region and area. The city is located on the river Psel. The population of this city is about 283 000 people. The city possesses Sumy Airport.
The city was founded in 1652 and originally was used as Cossack stronghold. It was planned to be the protection of Ukraine from the attacks of the Crimean Tatars. After the attacks took place that territory of the modern city was tranported to the Russian Empire. During the German. The war was over, destroyed parts of the city were restored anew.
The city centre was once characterised by the large cathedral of the Saviour's Transfiguration. It is a Classical structure of the XVIII th century, extensively renovated and reconstructed in 1858 and 1880s, when the bell tower of 56 metres was built. The interior features frescoes by Makovskiy and Lebedev architects. The Resurrection Church (1702), the oldest structure in the city, is still in true preservation, owing to recent restoration works. The Cathedral of the monastery of St. Pantaleon was created in 1911 according to the design projected by the architect A.Shusev and is scored to resemble medieval monuments of Pskov and Novgorod cities.

As the majority of the Eastern Ukrainian cities founded in 17th c., Sumy has quite a few architectural places worth visiting: Church of Resurrection (early 18th c., baroque style with purely Ukrainian elements characteristic of wooden churches implemented in a stone construction), Cathedral of Annunciation (18-19th c.c., initially Renaissance Ukrainian real estate with further baroque and classicistic alterations; fine decorum and paintings), former Cathedral of Trinity (early 20th c., now houses Organ music of the local philharmonic society and the Museum of Sculpture) are only some of them.
Local History Museum, Museum of Applied Arts, Fine Arts Museum are the most famous and most interesting Museums in the city that are recommended to be visited by the city guests.
