Feodosiya is one of the oldest and widest cities in the whole Europe. It was founded about 2600 years ago when the Pontic King Mitridates VI has built his fleet here to help in his war against the Roman Empire.
An outstanding and historically valuable figure from the Middle Ages is the Golden Horde's Khan Janibeck. In 1347 he used catapults to throw into the city the corpses of his own warriors who died from the awful disease of plague. The Genoese fled to Europe and there they started an epidemic that has taken the lives of about 85 million people, about a quarter of the European population.
The city of Feodosia also used to be one of the main important centers of the Great Silk Way. At the market of Feodosia a legendary Ukrainian Beauty Roksolana was sold. She got married with Turkish Sultan and afterwards became one of the most influential women in world history.
The Koktebel (that is located in a very close connection to Feodosia and is very popular among tourists) settlement is famous for its deep cultural traditions and is associated with a number of famous historical characters. The obligatory places of interest in Koktebel include the gliding museum, and the museum of the poet, artist, and philosopher Maximilian Voloshin. The local wines and cognacs definitely should be tasted.
Silent soaring above are the paraplanes, gliders and hang-gliders, and they form part of the spirit of this place. The air-gliding museum is on Klementyev's mountain - so called Uzun-Syrt.
Excellent view can be seen on sea walks, especially to Karadag ("Black mountain"). The village Kurortnoe is the closest settlement to Karadag. The reservation administration is situated here. It is possible to make an entertaining and educational walk from here. The delphinarium is nearby, where shows with sea animals are carried out for tourists.
