About the city and region
Vinnytsya is the city in the West Central Ukraine, administrative and cultural center of Vinnytsya region, stands on the Southern Bug River. It is an important railroad net located in an agricultural region. The main industries of Vinnytsya are presented by food processing, especially beet sugar refining, and the manufacture of machinery, fertilizer, and clothing. The community was erected in the 14th century around a Lithuanian fortress. It was kept by Poland in 1569 and was annexed by Russia in 1793. During the World War II Vinnytsya was captured by German army from 1941 to 1944. The population of the city is about 389,000 people.
Places of interest
Although this city suffered a lot at the times of the World War II, some residues of XVII th-XVIIIth-century architecture are left. They are usually shown to tourists and foreign guests of the city during a conventional city tour: the Dominican Cathedral (1624); Jesuit Monastery (1610); the Church of St.Nicholas (1746).
The other places of interest and one of the most famous historical memorials in the whole Ukraine are the Museum of Pirogov (outstanding Russian surgeon), Museum of Mykhaylo Kotsyubynskiy (Ukrainian writer), Hitler's HQ "Verwolf".
