Floods could come to the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, this spring, Kyiv City Council Deputy Volodymyr Bondarenko from the Bloc of Klychko has warned.
"As of today, the Kyiv hydroelectric station has a water mark of about 92 meters (above sea level according to the Baltic system), whereas a mark of 98 meters is critical. This is despite the fact that the snow has not yet started to melt," he reported to journalists at a press conference in Kyiv on Thursday.
Bondarenko noted that specialists, including those from the Kyiv hydroelectric station, had predicted floods at the level of those seen in 1970.
He dded that such a situation was seen as the city was not cleared of snow and there was too much water in the city's rainwater drainage systems.
"This spring, we could see a situation in which such Kyiv districts as Bortnychi, Podil, Obolon and Pozniaky could be flooded," Bondarenko admitted.
He reporyted that Kyiv's mayor had allocated Hr 17 million to clean the city of snow, however, the improvement of the situation had not been observed as the city's districts did not receive the required funds to improve the situation.
"The city authorities have demonstrated their inability to bring order to the city," Bondarenko added. |
